2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible First Drive

The Basics: Top Operation

The vinyl, cloth and folding hardtops available for the Sebring Convertible all use the same frame structure; consequently all three fold the same way. The hardtop’s action is par for the course: The trunk opens backwards, the top unlatches itself and folds neatly into the space, and the trunk plops back down to create a clean look. Sit in the car and lower the top with one touch of a button; if you use the optional remote you have to hold the button down for 30 seconds while the top lowers (27 seconds for soft tops). Chrysler noted that two full-size golf bags will fit in the trunk with the top folded, and the Sebring’s trunk offers a respectable 13.1 cu.-ft. of space with the top up.

2008 Jeep Liberty

All-new, smoother and a little larger.

The Jeep Liberty is all-new for 2008. It's slightly bigger and has a smoother ride, but it maintains the ruggedness of the previous version. The 2008 Liberty is quite capable off road, one of the best in its class.
The 2008 Jeep Liberty is 2.5 inches longer overall and its wheelbase is two inches longer than that of its predecessor. With heavily revised styling, the 2008 Liberty is taller and more angular than the 2001-2007 models, reminiscent of the much-loved, rugged but crude 1990s Jeep Cherokee. Compared to recent Jeep offerings such as the Patriot and Compass, the all-new 2008 Liberty is more of a true Jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling.

The only engine for 2008 is a carryover 3.7-liter V6 that makes 210 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a four-speed automatic is optional. In these days of six-speed automatics, the four-speed is somewhat antiquated, and we don't think it gets the most out of the 3.7-liter V6, an engine that could use a little help. When it comes to fuel economy, the Liberty's weight and powertrain provide numbers that are on the lower end of the class.

Woman Logs 1.1 Million Miles on Stock 1970 Chevy Camaro SS350!

In April, 1970, Emma Ely bought her third Chevy Camaro, an SS350 in an eye-popping Nassau Blue color with decorative white stripes. 38 years later, Emma not only continues to use the Camaro as a daily driver but she has managed to stack more than 1,100,000 miles on the coupe’s odometer –all on the original motor, transmission, and rear end! Just recently the 72-year-old retired nurse paid about $6,000 –nearly twice what she paid for the car in 1970, to perform a mini-restoration to the Camaro SS350 that included a new paintjob and some new parts that she hand picked herself. Amazing to say the least.

What’s New: Safety

A car without a roof is scary to some, so the Sebring Convertible comes with a phalanx of safety equipment as standard. As expected there are standard airbags in front and on the side. Anti-lock control of the four-wheel disc brakes is also standard, as is a tire pressure monitoring system. Daytime running headlights are optional, and Chrysler’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is optional on Touring and Limited models only; base model buyers don’t even get traction control. What isn’t standard, or even available, is any kind of rollover protection, all the more reason to spring for at least the Touring model so you can get ESP.

What’s New: Outside

The Sebring Convertible is all new from the outside, and shares its basic look with the new Sebring sedan; whether this is a good or bad thing we’ll leave up to you. The two cars share the same sheetmetal from the windshield pillars forward, along with their taillights, but everything in between is different. Convertiblization is good for the Sebring. Top up, the convertible loses the sedan’s stubby trunk and hunchback roof for a distinct improvement. It’s even better with the top down, helped in no small way by the built-in hard tonneau that covers the stacked top. We still think the car needs a rhinoplasty and eye lift, but the convertible’s top-down profile isn’t bad.

Tire Wear

The condition of your tires is one of the most important mechanical factors in vehicle safety. There are four ways you can improve the safety and performance of your tires.
Keep tires properly inflated. Check them at least monthly to notice if tire pressure appears to be getting low. Incorrect tire pressure can cause uneven tire wear, poor handling, excessive heat build up, and possible tire failure. Check your vehicle manual for recommended tire pressures. If you have new tires installed, check their pressure. Recommended tire pressures can vary depending on the brand of tire. When you check tire pressure, do so the first thing in the morning for an accurate reading. Driving the car heats up the tires and changes their pressure.

Rotate tires to increase life. Follow the rotation schedule in your car’s owner’s manual.
Keep tires balanced and aligned. Improperly balanced tires can produce an uneven ride that can result in poor handling. Defective alignment can cause excessive tire wear and the vehicle to pull to the side.

Replace tires when the tread gets too low. What is too low? All tires have “treadwear indicators” built right into them. These indicators are molded into the bottom of the tread groves and will appear as “bands” when the tread depth reduces to the size of 1/16th of an inch. When the indicators appear in two or more adjacent grooves, the tire should be replaced. Look in your vehicle’s manual for more information. Usually the manual will have a picture showing what the tread wear indicators look like. Take a look at your tires on a regular basis. Have a professional check them out further if you have any doubts about their safety.

Make sure that your automobile is up to date on its service schedule.

Richmond has been the capital of Virginia since 1780 when it was moved from Williamsburg. Before Williamsburg, the capital was located in the first permanent English settlement in the New World. What was its name?

Jamestown.
In May 1607, three ships, 'Susan Constant', 'Godspeed' and 'Discovery', landed at what is now known as the Jamestown settlement. In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, replicas of the three ships were built and will visit cities along the East Coast as floating museums. Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg are located about 45 minutes from Richmond. Scenic Route 5 stretches between Richmond and Williamsburg with several historic plantations along the way.
